SUMMARY Under general supervision, provides maintenance and upkeep for the inside and outside of MPS Secondary School buildings.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides maintenance and upkeep for the inside and outside of MPS Secondary School buildings; performs work within scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- May oversee work shift and coordinate tasks for Janitor Engineers; works on assigned projects, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience.
- Cleans buildings, including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing, and refinishing; cleans and sanitizes bathrooms and restocks supplies; removes trash from classrooms, offices and hallways; replaces burned out lights; reports electrical and mechanical failures; cleans and adjusts furniture.
- Cleans and maintains grounds, including seasonal lawn care and snow removal.
- Performs preventive maintenance tasks, routine inspections, scheduled maintenance, and minor repairs for machinery and equipment in MPS buildings.
- Operates and maintains Heating-Ventilation-Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems; checks mechanical systems operations, changes filters and belts, and lubricates components; reports operational irregularities and repair needs to supervisor.
- Sets up and tears down furniture and equipment, and performs other tasks for special events.
- Controls work site to assure that safety rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
- Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; cleans up spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner and according to procedures.
- Follows manufacturer’s directions for use and dilution of all chemicals and cleaning products.
- Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries; reports security issues and illegal activities; performs office duties as needed.
- Provides customer service as needed, responds to requests, and assists co-workers and visitors.
- Opens and closes facilities and sets security systems; responds to emergency situations including call backs for break-ins and mechanical problems; assists with safety drills and annual cleaning duties.
- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
- Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
- Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
- Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis
- At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Must be a permanent employee (those that have passed probation) who is currently classified as an Assistant Janitor Engineer In Charge Elementary School and who has at least 12 months (1 year) of full-time experience in the classification Assistant Janitor Engineer In Charge Elementary.
- Internal MPS applicants who do not meet the qualifications listed above may be considered as an external applicant with a combination of internal and external experience listed below, as determined by Human Resources.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum of 48 months full-time (4 years) experience performing general custodial duties working with boilers and building maintenance, with 24 months full-time experience (2 years) of the four years acting as a team lead. Working knowledge of custodial housekeeping procedures. Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals used and their safe use. Working knowledge of fire alarms. Working knowledge of Life Safety Systems. Ability to use all custodial equipment ie: floor scrubber, vacuums, etc. Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Strong Microsoft Word technology skills. Experience operating and maintaining Heating-Ventilation-Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- Combination of education and experience may be used, as determined by Human Resources.
- Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Techniques and procedures used in the cleaning and maintenance of public buildings.
- Federal and state safety rules and regulations.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Techniques for use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.
- Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Working independently to complete daily activities.
- Following and maintaining safety standards.
- Safely using tools, equipment and chemicals.
- Interpreting and applying verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers and others.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required. Valid Boiler Operator’s license First (1st) Class Engineer License Grade “C” (or better) from Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities; requires constant physical efforts; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed including use of safety equipment; a job in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds. External applicants will need to pass the CRT (Cost Reduction Technologies) physical assessment at the appropriate level for the position.
SELECTION PROCESS The following tests may be used. At each step of the selection process, the department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants to be tested. Applicants must pass each phase in order to continue thru the selection process.

- Applicants may choose to use veterans preference. Applicant will need to provide a copy of DD214 at the time of the written test.

SALARY: S.E.I.U Local No 63 $20.38/hr
